The movie Zombie 3 was started under the direction of Lucio Fulci. There are several stories as to why he left the set. Some say he left due to health reasons, while others say he left because he was not permitted to direct the movie his way. In Fulci's absence direction was turned over to Bruno Mattei, who also directed Hell of the Living Dead. Those who feel that Fulci left for health reasons agree that he returned to filming and when he saw the direction the film had taken left again. The story goes that Fulci tried to get his name taken off of the film but died before being able to do so.
The zombies follow some of the basic premises established in George A. Romero's Dead Trilogy with some inconsistencies. They are sometimes slow moving, while at other times they jump and move quite quickly. At times they can only be killed by destroying their brains, while at other times they die after being stabbed or shot in the body. They also eat human flesh. These zombies are the result of a top-secret military bacteriological experiment gone awry. These zombies use weapons such as swords. They think and plan as in several scenes we see the zombies hide and jump out on victims. When these zombies are ignited they scream and try to put the flames out.
Some scenes show imagination but are absurd. In one instance a zombie's head is in a refrigerator. Yes, I said in a refrigerator. When the refrigerator is opened the head flies out and bites it's victims neck several times while the victim is unable to push the head away. In another scene a woman is grabbed by a zombie who pushes her face near a pregnant woman's abdomen, the woman has been infected but is not a zombie, a fetus reaches out with an adult sized hand and attacks the constrained woman. A crate with M-16s, ammunition and a flame-thrower is found in the basement of a hotel. There are more scenes like this.
The special makeup effects are good but inconsistent. They show zombies in the early stages of decomposition which is consistent with the story as all of the zombies are recently dead. Gore scenes are well done. I give the effects an average rating because some zombies have a green hue on their face and hands while their legs and arms are skin color.
The acting in Zombie 3 is not great, but not bad either. An attempt is made at character development but that is not the aim of this film. The aim of this movie is gore and zombies, plenty of zombies, and zombie attacks. It has plenty of gore, and surprise attacks. This movie is not a good movie for those except true zombie fans, and even those might find it to incredible to stomach.
The movie starts with a helicopter arriving at a military base. At that same time a minibus carrying three terrorists arrives at a gate. Two scientists Dr. Holder (Robert Marius) and his assistant Norma, guarded by four soldiers are walking down a corridor in the basement of the military base. They are carrying a top-secret military experiment "Death One" in a silver metal box. An elevator takes them up stairs where they walk towards the helicopter, which has landed.

When they get near the helicopter, the minibus carrying the three terrorists comes between them and the helicopter. The three terrorists jump out and attack. The soldiers push the scientists to the ground and a fire fighter ensues between the soldiers and the terrorists. All of the soldiers are killed and two of the terrorists are killed. The remaining terrorist runs over, grabs the silver box and runs off into the forest. More soldiers arrive and Dr. Holder tells one of them to get in the helicopter and get after the terrorist. Dr. Holder tells the soldier that the box is top-secret and if it gets out it will be the end of everything.
The helicopter takes off and the soldier in it starts firing at the terrorist with a submachine gun. After a short chase the terrorist is hit in the hand causing him to drop the case and what was in the case to leak out. The terrorist goes back to pick up the case and gets some of the liquid on his hand. His hand immediately turns green and the terrorist gets hot.

The terrorist runs off leaving the case. Dr. Holder meets with other scientist to discuss the situation. He tells them the Death One compound is considered an extremely powerful bacteriological weapon. General Morton and two officers, Coleman and Chase, arrive telling Dr. Holder that they found the case broken. The officer states that the terrorist seems to have been infected. Dr. Holder tells him that the infection can be spread through contact with bodily fluids.

The terrorist is now in room 4 of the Sweet River Resort Hotel. It appears he has been drinking a lot of water. A young man from the hotel room service takes up another glass of water removing the old glass. When the young man walks down the hall he bumps into a maid, dropping and breaking the glass. When he picks up the glass he cuts his hand. By this time the terrorist's whole hand has turned green. The terrorist takes a knife and cuts off his hand in an attempt to stop the spread of the infection. It is obvious that it is to late since green sores are on his face. When the maid enters the room to clean it the terrorist kills her. Down in the hotel lobby we see that the young man from hotel room service has been infected.

Suddenly soldiers wearing biohazard suits arrive at the hotel. When they get to the terrorist's room they find the dead maid. The soldiers outside find the terrorist dead in a laundry room.
When the inform General Morton, he orders all the guest at the hotel killed and buried in a mass grave. When the soldiers bring the body of the terrorist back to the military base the body of terrorist is burned.

After the body has been burned Dr. Holder tells General Morton that burning the body does not end the infection. In fact it might have spread the infection. We are shown the smoke drifting into the air where birds are flying.
We see Patricia (Beatrice Ring) driving with her boyfriend Glen for a weekend together. They stop when the see a large number of birds lying on the road.
When they get out of their car to take a better look one of the birds flies up and pecks Glen in the face. Glen and Patricia get back into the car and continue driving looking for help. They stop at a gas station looking for help and/or water. Patricia goes into the gas station and is attacked by a zombie. She manages to get back to the corvette where she and Glen drive away.
We join three soldiers, Bo (Massimo Vanni AKA Alex Mc Bride), Kenny (Deran Sarafian) and Roger (Ottaviano Dell'Acqua AKA Richard Raymond) on leave for the weekend driving their jeep down the road.

They get behind a camper with five girls four of whom are Suzanne, Carole (Marina Loi), Lia (Deborah Bergamini), Nancy (Ulli Reinthaler), and three men one whom is David. The girls start a conversation with the soldiers while driving.
A group of birds attacks the camper and fly in injuring Lia. The camper and the jeep arrive at the Sweet River Resort Hotel. The soldiers want to know what happened to the hotel because it is deserted. Inside the soldiers find a crate full of guns in the basement of the hotel.
Scientist are getting reports of a radioactive cloud in the area. General Morton is getting reports of murders and people eating each other. General Morton gives orders to quarantine the contaminated area. He further orders that everyone in the contaminated area is to be killed.
Bo and one of the women drive off looking for help. The jeep suffers engine trouble and they are forced to stop in a town and look for water for the radiator. The woman goes off looking for water. It appears to be deserted. A zombie knocks her into a smoking lake. Bo dives in and pulls her to safety. When he gets her to shore her legs are gone and she attacks him trying to bite him.
He fights her off knocking her back into the water. She appears to disintegrate. He starts to run and hordes of zombies come after him.
He makes it to the road where he stops Patricia and Glen in the red corvette. Glen turns into a zombie and attacks Patricia. Bo fights with him when Patricia stops the car.
More zombies come and kill Ken. Patricia is left alone on the bridge with zombies coming in both directions. She jumps off of the bridge.
At the hotel one of the men and one of the women from the camper go to look for food. When the man opens the refrigerator and the head of a zombie flies out and bites the man killing him.
Another zombie grabs the woman and kills her. In front of the hotel Roger and Ken are on guard duty. Upstairs Lia has turned into a zombie and attacks Nancy. Nancy escapes.

Patricia walks to the hotel and meets Ken and Roger out front.
Zombies come right behind her.
The horde of zombies comes at the hotel, which the soldiers have barricaded.
When the zombies brake through the barricade Roger shoots them with a flame-thrower One of the men from the camper falls down and the zombies kill him. Everyone goes up stairs. They jump off of the balcony and escape into the woods.
Now they must avoid the hordes of zombies and the soldiers who were ordered to kill everyone in the contaminated area.
